This lab aligns to CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006) exam objective 1.1: Explain basic Linux concepts.

By the end of this lab, you will be able to: 

  • Explain the basic Linux boot process and its key components
  • Explain the FHS and directory structure
  • Explain common Linux server architectures and their use cases
  • Describe common Linux distributions and their characteristics
  • Explain Linux software licensing models and interface types

Overview

Welcome to the Basic Linux Concepts lab.

Linux is an open-source operating system based on Unix, created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Several different versions, or distributions, are available, including Ubuntu, Red Hat Linux, and SUSE Linux.

In this lab, you will review foundational Linux concepts related to system startup, directory structures, server architectures, and distributions. You will work through guided reading activities to interpret how these components function and interact. By the end of the lab, you will be able to identify and explain key elements that support the operation of a Linux system.
