Overview

X.Org Foundation maintains the development of the X Windows system. X is a basic windowing system that runs on most Linux environments. It was introduced in 1984 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). X is a framework for a graphical user interface (GUI) environment. By performing this lab, students will learn how to configure the GUI environment called X Windows in CentOS Server and Fedora desktop.

In this lab, you will learn to:

  1. Generate an xorg.conf file in CentOS.
  2. Run GUI commands on a remote host.
  3. Configure Display Managers in CentOS.

Key terms and descriptions

X Windows
X is a basic windowing system that runs on most Linux environments. It was introduced in 1984 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). X is a framework for a graphical user interface (GUI) environment.
GNOME
GNOME is a free and open-source desktop environment for Linux systems developed by the GNOME Project. It was introduced in August of 1997.
KDE
KDE is a modern desktop environment that uses Qt cross-platform GUI toolkit. It was first introduced in August 1998.
